Umatilla Hill Neighborhood

Description

This little neighborhood in Port Townsend covers 2-1/2 blocks and includes 10 garden-courtyard cottages and 17 fee-lots with small and medium-sized houses. Some were built as spec homes; others were custom designed. Umatilla Hill was built and developed by Fred Kimball and Rick Landis.

The neighborhood’s streets and lanes are made to be livable spaces — there are no streets of blank garage doors and soul-less portico entries. Large porches and active rooms of the houses face the street, while garages, studios, workshops, backyard cottages and gardens are accessed off of rear lanes. Mid-block pedestrian walkways connect the blocks and trails link Umatilla to the surrounding neighborhoods.
